First Nations Monday

 

Many years ago, as I was sharing about Native American history, Cherokee history, American history, Church history and my tribe's history, I came up with this simple timeline for the purpose of illustrating how our understanding of history broadens when we incorporate other views.  Names in BOLD are the names of hereditary chiefs of the Amonsoquath Tribe of Cherokee. Please see below.  Feel free to share.  I just ask that you give me credit.

AD 1540 - First Cherokee encounter with a European.  (DeSoto, Spaniard)

AD 1593 - 1618:  Chief Wahunsunacock or Powhatan.

 

AD 1607 - Jamestown was founded.

AD 1611 - First Bible available for the ‘common man’.  - King James Version, England.

AD 1613 - Pocahontas baptized in Christian faith by an Anglican minister, and given the name, Rebecca. 

AD 1618 - 1645:  Chief Opechancanough.

AD 1620 - Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock.

AD 1620 - First Indian Residential Boarding School –
Quebec by the Recollets, Catholic.* - Canada

AD 1622 - First major Indian retaliation.

AD 1645 - 1696:  Unnamed Traitor To The Family

AD 1646 - The Amonsoquath began their migration away from home lands.

AD 1696 - 1729:  Chief John Bolling

 

AD 1721 - First treaty entered into by the Cherokees and England.

AD 1730 - 1760:  Chief Moytoy

AD 1760 - 1765:  Sequoyah was born.

AD 1773 - First known Cherokee convert to Christianity.

AD 1776 - Declaration of Independence

AD 1778 - First treaty between the US and Indians

AD 1783 - 1819:  The Bowles

AD 1789 - 1797   GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESIDENCY

AD 1789 - “Thanksgiving” declared a holiday. ( Revisions: 1863, 1939-1941 )

 

AD 1801 - First Christian mission of the Cherokee Nation.

AD 1819 - 1842:  Chief John Wilson

AD 1821 - First written language of the Cherokee Nation. 

AD 1829 - 1837   ANDREW JACKSON PRESIDENCY

AD 1830 - Removal Act of 1830 .
Begins 10 year relocation including the 1838 ‘Trail of Tears’ march.

AD 1832 - Black Hawk War ( Sauk and Fox )

AD 1837 - Painting of the baptism of Pocahontas. Displayed 1840. 

AD 1842 - 1858:  Chief Jordon Mashburn

AD 1854 - The Indian Appropriation Act ( Establishing of Indian Reservations)

AD 1858 - 1876:  Chief Benjamin Mashburn

AD 1861 - 1865   ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENCY

AD 1861 - Civil War

AD 1861 – First Indian Res Boarding School in Mission, BC - Canada
( last to close June 30, 1984) *

AD 1861 - 1865 - Pocahontas’ baptism featured on the 20 dollar bill.

AD 1865 - 1867  Black Hawk War of Utah (Ute)

AD 1876 - 1941:  Chief Irving Mashburn

AD 1885 - Cherokee Nation adopts the European “Thanksgiving Celebration”

AD 1886 - Statue of Liberty (Inscription 1903)

 

AD 1924 - The Indian Citizenship Act

AD 1931 – Canada Indian Res Schools: 
44 Roman Catholic; 21 Anglican;  13 United; 2 Presbyterian *

AD 1941 - 1972:  Chief Joseph Mashburn

AD 1972 - Present:  Chief Martin Walking Bear Wilson.

AD 1978 - American Indian Religious Freedom Act

AD 1990 - ( or 1992) - Native American Languages Act.

AD 1990’s - The month of “November” designated as
National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month
