Many years ago, as I was sharing about
Native American history, Cherokee history, American history, Church
history and my tribe's history, I came up with this simple timeline for
the purpose of illustrating how our understanding of history broadens
when we incorporate other views.
Names in BOLD are the names of hereditary chiefs of the Amonsoquath
Tribe of Cherokee. Please see below. Feel free to share. I
just ask that you give me credit.
AD 1540 - First
Cherokee encounter with a European. (DeSoto, Spaniard)
AD 1593 - 1618:
Chief Wahunsunacock or Powhatan.
AD 1607 - Jamestown was
founded.
AD 1611 - First Bible
available for the ‘common man’. - King James Version, England.
AD 1613 - Pocahontas
baptized in Christian faith by an Anglican minister, and given the name,
Rebecca.
AD 1618 - 1645:
Chief Opechancanough.
AD 1620 - Pilgrims land
at Plymouth Rock.
AD 1620 - First Indian
Residential Boarding School –
Quebec by the Recollets, Catholic.* - Canada
AD 1622 - First major
Indian retaliation.
AD 1645 - 1696:
